Jim & Geri in Britain

Great Britain
Day 3 - Saturday, 10 May 1997

Bath was a lovely place to start our trip. We were jet-lagged of course, plus it was raining, so we got off to a slow start and didn't see everything we had on our list. That proved to be true for the entire trip - you just can't see and do everything! We visited the Abbey and the Roman Baths and just wandered around town.

There are three sets of hot springs in this city. They were considered holy by the pre-Roman people who lived here (Druids? Pagans? and apparently some even earlier people, the ones who built Stonehenge) When the Romans moved out to conquer the world, they took over such things as sources of water - it gave them control, didn't it? I think that fresh water was the single most important asset any area had in those days. The Romans built a great spa over one set of the springs, and the ruins of that spa is the great tourist attraction of Bath today. It's a shame that it isn't still usable.
